A variety of philosophies in writings evolved throughout the years JZ was writing, as well as sorting out the various aspects and problems of the American-English language.
- Many express something they read – or see in films/shows – as being gratuitous. They often refer to the statement for things they have little interest in, or possibly, find embarrassing. They also use the term to press their limited views on others, suppressing a greater perspective of culture and the universe. JZ has reasons for what is written and nothing is gratuitous.
- The size of JZ ’s works is ridiculed by some, though many authors have large, layered stories of social-political views. Notably, Atlas shrugged by Ayn Rand is a sizable volume, having over 1,100 pages and 561,996 word count. This body of literature has become the subject of considerable discussion. Though JZ wishes to have influence on society’s social-political views, it is not creating a comparison, since his writings are considerably different. This puts a word count of 480 per page. Her book was presented to the next placed in two parts, with each considerably longer than JZ ’s longest volume. Another notable volume of Ayn Rand is The Fountainhead, with a word count of 311,596 in seven hundred and 753 pages (well over 400 words per page).
- Of course, the three volumes of Lord of the Rings are good sized, as is the works of Frank Herbert, Tom Clancy, George R. R. Martin, and of course the later works of JK Rowling. Even Oliver twist (Charles Dickens) was good-sized at the 155,960 words. Watership Down (Richard Adams) also tilted the scales to the heavy with the westward a count of 156,154. With that in mind, JZ has accepted his larger books as less arduous and does not need trimming down.
- With the above examples, the 250-300 pages that is often recommended for science fiction and fantasy, the more talked about writers place higher word count on the pages. It is always a balance between the number of pages and readability, and JZ hopes that his works would be as talked about. After all, isn’t that the reason authors do what they do? In the early creation of Tarrarian Plight, he observed considerable discussions between the residents at the high-rise condominium he was a concierge at.
- People have considered the extent of descriptive nature of the novels as excessive; however, most of the time, people have asked for more details. There are considerable number of authors that have considerable elaboration of their vision. For JZ , it is the vision that stimulates the descriptive aspects. He doesn’t want a mistaking of how the scenes progress or what the characters look like. As for the details of science, Michael Crichton’s Andromeda Strain, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Frank Herbert and many others have elaborated on the science, as well as other elements.
- There’s descriptive presentation of femellas – chubby and considerably buxom. As for the reasoning for adding such descriptions in his writing, JZ expresses that such women are everywhere within the population and are not being represented. Mainly – JZ enjoys such women considerably more than thinner for his visual and cuddling nature.
- To JZ , promoting affection and intimacy over violence is far from gratuitous. Hunger Games is an example where the expression of violence was expressed openly, where the mere kiss was seen as nearly taboo. The plot of children murdering each other was found acceptable, yet to have true intimacy not shown. Considering that a great many people were hungry, why was prostitution and not expressed in any true manner?
- There is considerable number of adventure, fantasy and science fiction that has no problems lopping off heads and arms, though skirt around the subject of intimacy. The Indiana Jones series has considerable number of deaths, including a lobbying off of heads and melting of faces. Star Wars lobs off an arm in the first released film, having a number of deaths preceding and following the occurrence. Don’t get JZ wrong, he loves both series, as well as Star Trek. The point is not the adventures as they present, though the skirting around intimacy.
- The subject of film rating and intimacy is presented the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, having an explanation of why films of lower age ratings allow violence, bullying and such, though intimacy becomes a problem. Understand, JZ’s work is not for the young. However, are we – as a culture – allowing the acceptance of social and wartime violence at the expense of affection?
- Terms modern people uses flitter from fad to fad, loosening substance. Marketing chases the fads like a dog chasing its tail – occasionally catching it for a time. Not caring for the current trends, or accepting contemporary lifestyles, JZ writes for substance of progression within the cultures. JZ is not catering to the general, fickle population. He wishes for the routing of broader acceptance to take hold and spread.
- The capitalization of titles has plagued JZ for some time. In the military, most all titles are capitalized, though many civilians take issue to doing so. For a variety reason the titles of nobles want to be without capitalization. As a general default, JZ is using capitalization for referencing a person by their title (in lieu of their actual name), as would be done with nicknames, honorifics (Dad, Mom Mother, etc.) and aliases.
- Most people in the 20th century, drifting into the 21st Century, held to the removal of semicolons as a “simpler is better” rule. Unfortunately, this leads to sentence confusion that sometimes takes a couple-few rounds to figure out – such as in, “Without Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune would be inside Mercury’s orbit.” [Extracted from the May 2018 issue of astronomy.] Coming across a variety of statements related to the use of semicolons to prevent, confusion – even when such parts would be considered incomplete sentences – JZ adopted the use more readily. It would allow the prior sentence to become without Jupiter; Uranus and Neptune would be inside Mercury’s orbit. This use is a general exception of semicolon use to link elements that would be considered full sentences on their own. As with so much of the American-English grammar, there are a multitude of exceptions – something that drove JZ into frustration.
- His greater use of semicolons in his works came from sorting out the American-English grammar. In trying to determine why others have attempted to eradicate the use, JZ considered the time it fell out of favor. Prior to typewriters, semicolons were used more often. In May 2018, JZ began speculating that the onset of typewriters could be a factor. When such typewriters arose, the semicolon was not on the keyboard, and shifting was not available yet. Either another key would have had to have been added – making the layout crowded and more subject to hang ups – semicolons were achieved by pressing the colon, followed by a backspace stroke, then the comma. For the simple addition of a semicolon requiring 3 strokes, JZ imagines a lot of people began admitting semicolons finding a variety of justifications. Since the lack of semicolons being used in sentencing creates a confusion – especially when related to lists with commas – people simplified their sentence structure, creating a series of smaller sentences.
- In his learning of American-English grammar, JZ came across the understanding of semicolons in use of conjunctive adverbs (though, therefore, however, indeed, etc.) giving a distinctive association with the parts. This concept may seem obvious to many scholars, and people claiming such knowledge, though JZ had harder time coming to such understandings.
- JZ decided that names presented at the beginning of quotations are to stand alone. In the book Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfust), examples of this writing style is shown. At the bottom of page 483: “Master Kvothe. I’m afraid you’ve missed your friend.”
- For those who may criticize the erotic nature of JZ’s writing, there are considerable examples of such in mainstream writing. Mind Guest (Sharon Green) had numerous descriptions of bonded intimacy.
- JZ has come to the conclusion that most authors don’t place affections within their works because they lack the true clarity of affection and intimacy – relying on the dictates of society to guide their own views.
- Logan’s Run presented carnal pleasures openly – even in the film. The apartment scene of the film, Logan first meets Jessica when selecting for intimacy. There are several others before Jessica appeared – including a man who Logan rejects. Then there is the stimulation missed first used in the opening Jessica seen, as well as in a pleasure orgy when Logan first runs.
~ Books and the Relation with JZ ~
- As with all authors, various books have influenced JZ throughout his life. Some of that influenced the writing style, notably the details and layers.
- Though JZ had read a number of lighter fantasies by his teen years, Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien had great influence. As with many, Lord of the Rings was his first true fantasy series.
- Atlas shrugged by Ayn Rand was listened to on CD. When it comes to influencing his life, the book did not justify the elements the author may have intended. Through years of contemplating social behaviors of people, JZ had come to similar conclusions about people not being what they seem upfront. However, the book appears to have the bipolar relation between capitalism and socialism that is permeating in society. It assumes there is only the two views and, like so many people in modern society, disregard of their social-political elements entirely.
- Another notable book of influence for JZ he read one younger was the Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. Over the years since he read it, he found it is a volume few people take to heart when they write for young adults. In the story, there is a considerable referencing to bullying, gang fights, drug use, even teenage murder, suicide and pregnancy. It is a cautionary story told in the realities of the 1960s, and relevant in the 1970s.
